The debut single from Cher Lloyd was the blissfully infectious …

‘Swagger Jagger’

…released 31 July 2011, it went straight into the UK charts at Number 1!

♥♥♥

The track opens with Cher singing the ‘Swagger Jagger, Swagger Jagger, you should get some of your own,’ over small crackles and pops – as if the recording was been played back on vinyl. Then kick in the drums and the  blaring airhorns, before Cher raps ‘you can’t stop looking at me, staring at me, be what I be…’ and declares her swagger’s in check. Swagger Jagger incoporates the melody from a famous traditional North American folk song called “Darling Clementine” and  is a song about copycats who need to ‘get some [swag] of their own’. I interpret it as a rallying call for the listeners with their own “swagger in check” to face down the haters with the message to them been – just “let it go”…

The video begins with Cher pressing play on her MP3 player and slipping it into her pocket whereupon we find her in an urban setting carrying an enormous ghetto blaster. Wearing a leather jacket with what I consider her ™ on the lapel and the words ‘Swagger Jagger’ emblazoned across the back, Cher sets down her Soundbox and so starts the music. Animated speakers and megaphones on poles quickly unfold from the device to accompany the prominent airhorns and the track gets under way. Animations spring all around Cher wherever she goes and she is joined by her gang for the dance routines. There’s loads of images of speakers and of volume controls turning themselves up, there’s also costume and setting changes from club to street and back again, with Cher’s fashion ranging from Urban Street to Urban Chic. It’s all fantastic!

♥♥

You know, I think ‘Swagger Jagger’ is my all time favourite Cher Lloyd song, I just really really like that track. And I don’t care what anyone says about the song as I just love it’s blistering airhorns and catchy hooks – I think it’s fab – so if you hate it – just ‘get out of MY way’ ha ha!!! Swagger Jagger was a brilliant debut as it’s as catchy as hell and really gets stuck in your brain. It’s as if the animated airhorns and speakers that unfold, and expand and stretch out in the video also do so in your own head until they’ve completely filled it. As I said before, it blew me off my little peds and it has to be the boldest debut by anyone for ages – I do love it!!!

There were a number of remixes that were also available: Hygrade Radio Mix (which was on the cd as track 2) and also; Hygrade Club Mix, Wideboys Radio Edit, Dillon Francise Remix and Eyes Remix (available for download, for example from Cher’s online shop on her website). Of the downloadable remix’s all four have a big clubby sound (those airhorns helping with that!) – Hygrade Club Mix and Eyes keep it very Dubstep + Wideboys and Dillion Francis retaining this too yet adding some House. My personal fave is the Dillion Francis Remix which is full of big Dubstep bass noise and a 4/4 avoiding heavy drumbeat – but when the track reaches the chorus and Cher sings “Hi Hater, Kiss Kiss, I’ll see you later” it all lightens up with skittering vocals and a shed load of electronic tweets and bleeps – I listen to that and I’m in heaven!!!
And I also found on Ebay a sampler cd of Swagger Jagger. This contained the lead track itself, this time described as a ‘Radio Edit’ and all the tracks above. It also contained a ‘Wideboys Club Mix’, a ‘Wideboys Mega Dub’ and a ‘Punjabi MC Remix’. To my knowledge, these 3 final remixes must be very rare as I can’t find them to have ever been released, so I made sure I snapped up a copy hee hee x

Swagger Jagger was written by Cher Lloyd, Autumn Rowe, Jermaine Jackson, Andrew Harr, Andre Davidson, Sean Davidson, Marcus Lomax and Clarence Coffee Jr. The song went on to sell over 200,000 in the UK .
